Categories of vehicles in Portugal
Vehicles in Portugal are generally divided into four classes. The classification depends on the height of the vehicle at the front axle and on the total number of axles on the vehicle. Motorcycles with the Via Verde electronic system form the 5th class, which gives a 30% discount on travel. On ViaVerde.pt you can check the category by car make and model.

There are two separate fare systems in Portugal. The older system allows payment by cash or credit card. Electronic fees are paid exclusively through an automatic system or using prepaid cards. Payment by cash or card
Tolls can only be paid in cash or by credit card on certain motorways. They are marked as Portagem Manual or Manual Toll, the classic open system is used here. At the entrance from the motorway you will receive a ticket, and at the exit you will pay the employees of the customs station.
EasyToll
EasyToll is an automatic electronic toll system for vehicles registered abroad. Only Visa, Mastercard and Maestro credit cards are accepted. The driver must insert the card into the payment terminal, and the system will link the card to the car’s license plate. The fee will then be automatically deducted from your bank account.
There is a registration fee of 0.74€ and an additional admin fee of 0.32€ applies to each trip. Registration is valid for 30 days. A payment card can only be registered at 4 points at the main border crossings.
TollCard
TollCard works on the principle of a prepaid loan, cards are available for sale worth 5, 10, 20 or 40 euros. TollCards are available at all post offices or CTT post offices or service stations , or online at Portugaltolls.com .
TollCard is activated via SMS with the card number and vehicle registration number. Upon activation, you must take into account the activation fee of 0.74€ and the administration fee of 0.32€ for each departure.
Virtual card
For €20.74 you can drive a huge number of motorways with e-tolls in 3 days. TollService is available at Portuguese post offices or petrol stations or can be used online at CTT.pt.
The card can be purchased on several motorways for pre-defined routes that start or end at Porto and Faro airports for a €0.74 registration fee and fare.
Via Verde Visitors
Via Verde is a classic electronic fare collection system. A device is attached to the windshield of the car, fixing the passage through the toll gate. The commissions are then withdrawn from the bank account.
For cars registered abroad, a special Via Verde Visitors rate applies. The property rental lasts 90 days, the first fee is 6€, in the following weeks the fee is 1.5€, an additional refundable deposit of 27.50€ is paid. The advantage of Via Verde Visitors is that it can be used on all Portuguese motorways.
Additional tolls on motorways
It is possible to pay additional fees for individual toll highway operators. Some sources state that only vehicles registered in Portugal can pay the surcharge, however the official website dedicated to paying the fare also allows vehicles registered abroad to pay.
We recommend using this method only as a last resort, the surcharge applies only to certain motorways and, in addition, the indicated deadlines must be strictly observed.

In addition to motorway tolls, some bridges are charged in Portugal. At the Vasco da Gama and 25 de Abril bridges in Lisbon, payment can be made in cash or by credit card.

Fines for non-payment of tolls
Fines for unpaid travel allegedly amount to ten times. On motorways with electronic toll collection, a thorough inspection is carried out using a camera system, it is in no case worth driving without a toll that must be paid.
Free motorway sections in Portugal
In Portugal, some major city detours and shorter motorway sections are free. There are no tolls in Madeira and other Portuguese islands.
Portuguese drivers are hot and not very interested in the rules. However, if you travel to this country in your own vehicle or rent a car, you will attract more attention from the police. You will also be checked on the roads more often to detect the slightest mistakes. But, as is customary in these countries, most police officers are condescending and accommodating.

The police can fine drivers on the spot. Most police cars are equipped with instant payment terminals. In Portugal, the penalty points system has been in place since 2016.
By default, all drivers are awarded 12 points, with two to six points deducted each time a violation is recorded. If drivers have 4 points left on their account, they must undergo additional road safety training.

Tires
Tire tread depth is over 1.6mm. Winter tires are optional. Anti-slip chains are required if required by traffic signs.
Seat belts
The use of seat belts is mandatory for all vehicle occupants.
Children in the car
Children under 12 and under 135 cm must use an approved restraint system appropriate for their height and weight and must sit in the back seat of a vehicle.
The exception is children under 3 years old, who can sit in a car seat in the front passenger seat against the direction of travel, provided that the airbag for this seat is turned off.
Alcohol while driving
The maximum legal blood alcohol level in Portugal is 0.5 ppm. For novice drivers with experience up to 3 years and for professional drivers, the limit is reduced to 0.2 ppm.
The penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol are as follows:
