Checking and replacing fuses

If something electrical in your car stops working, the first thing you should check is a blown fuse. Use the chart or diagram on the fuse box cover to determine which fuse or fuses control that component. Check those fuses first, but check all fuses before deciding that a blown fuse is not the cause. Replace any blown fuses and test the component for operation.

  1. Turn the ignition key to the LOCK (0) position. Make sure the headlights and all other accessories are off.
  2. Remove the cover from the fuse box.
  3. Check each of the large fuses in the underhood fuse box by looking through the top to the wire inside.
  4. Check the smaller fuses in the underhood fuse box and all fuses in the interior fuse boxes by pulling each fuse with a fuse puller located in the underhood fuse box.
  5. Find the blown wire inside the fuse. If it is blown, replace it with a spare fuse of the same rating or lower.
If you cannot drive the car without fixing the problem and you do not have a spare fuse, get a fuse of the same or lower rating from one of the other circuits. Make sure you can temporarily bypass that circuit (such as an outlet or radio). If you replace a blown fuse with a lower-rated spare fuse, it may blow again. This does not indicate anything. Replace the fuse with a fuse of the correct rating as soon as possible.
  6. If a replacement fuse of the same rating blows after a short time, your vehicle likely has a serious electrical problem. Leave the blown fuse in that circuit and have a qualified mechanic check your vehicle.
Note

Replacing a fuse with a higher rating greatly increases the chances of damaging the electrical system. If you do not have a spare fuse with the correct rating for the circuit, install a fuse with a lower rating.
