In Spain, most paid sections have a closed system. This means that when you enter the motorway, you pick up your ticket at the turnstile and pay at the exit or at the end of the toll section.

Payment by cash or card

Tolls can be paid in cash or by credit card at toll stations. Common payment cards are accepted such as MasterCard, Visa, Dinners and many more. Banknotes with a maximum value of 50 euros and all coins, except for 1 and 2 cents, are accepted for cash settlement.

Bip&Drive

An elegant solution is to use Via-T via the   Bip&Drive function  . Bip&Drive collects tolls automatically in Spain, Portugal and France.

The service offers parking in more than 100 car parks throughout Spain, including in some residential areas. You can choose from several recurring billing offers that include equipment rental, administration, and account maintenance. Motorcycle drivers can rent a wristband from Bip&Drive, which in all respects will replace the in-vehicle electronic fare device.

Speeding fines in Spain

While in many other European countries the top speed has been reduced, in Spain this trend has failed, despite a decrease in accidents. Until now, you can drive on motorways 120 km / h, on expressways 100 km / h, in cities 50 km / h.

If you receive a fine from an automatic radar in your mailbox, you can halve the amount of your payment with an expedited payment. But be careful, by doing this you are waiving your right to appeal against it. On roads and highways there is often a so-called civilian guard, that is, public protection, which can be recognized by dark green cars. But the local cops are lenient and helpful if you need advice.

Radar detectors are banned in Spain. Drive carefully, especially on highways around cities and in the Canary Islands, where a lot is measured.

Driving fines in Spain

Since 2006, Spain has had a points system for assessing traffic violations. The driver has 12 points on his account, the so-called “punto”, from which points are deducted for offenses, like ours. A novice driver or a driver returning a driver’s license after it has been withdrawn starts with 8 points.

Violations are most often rated 2, 3, 4 or 6 points. In general, you cannot lose more than 8 points per day. You can only lose all points for very serious offenses, such as driving under the influence of alcohol or with a high amount of alcohol in the blood, if you exceed the speed limit by more than 50%.

If you’re good on the road, you can get your glasses back. If you don’t lose any more points within two years of your last offense (or three years of a very serious offense), you’ll be back in your original 12 points.

If you run out of points, your driver’s license will be revoked and you will not be allowed to drive any vehicle. After 6 months, you can take courses and exams and apply for a new driver’s license.
If you drive a car with 0 points on your account, you are committing a crime and you face imprisonment for a period of 3 to 6 months.

Since March of this year, a new road law has been in force, which has strengthened some penalties for traffic violations.

  • Driving without headlights in poor visibility – 200 € and 3 points
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol – up to 1000 € and 6 (max. 12) points
  • Driving without wearing seat belts – 200 € and 4 points
  • Using a mobile phone while driving – 200€ and 6 points
  • Traveling with an unfastened child or without a car seat – a fine of 200 € and 3 points
