To enter the country, you will need a green card (car insurance), a technical certificate, a driver’s and international license, and a visa in your passport (valid for at least six months after the end of the trip).

Russia has ratified both the Geneva and Vienna conventions on road traffic. Therefore, it does not matter if you apply for an international Geneva or Vienna license from any local authority. The only difference is that the Vienna visa is valid for 3 years from the date of issue, while the Geneva one is valid for 1 year. Both international driving licenses are presented as an addition to the Czech driving license, so both Czech and international driving licenses must be taken abroad.

If you are not the owner of the car you are driving, i.e. your name is not on the right, you will also need a power of attorney for the right to drive the car from the owner. The power of attorney must be written in Russian and have an officially certified signature. The signature can be checked at the Russian Embassy in Prague or at the consulates in Brno or Karlovy Vary. You can also write a power of attorney in Czech and officially translate it into Russian.

Mandatory vehicle equipment in Russia

The equipment must be the same as in the Czech Republic, but in addition to spare fuses, light bulbs, a jack, a triangle, a key, spare and first aid kits, there must be a fire extinguisher in the car.

An empty can of gasoline is also recommended. It will be especially useful in remote regions where the gas station network is not as extensive as in the interior.

Alcohol while driving

The legal blood alcohol level in the Russian Federation is 0.29 ppm.

Daylight

In Russia, it is mandatory to turn on the light all year round, regardless of the time of day.

Seat belts

Front and rear passengers must wear seat belts. Wearing a seat belt is the responsibility of the driver.

Cross section of ring solutions

Until 2017, the right-hand rule was in force in Russia when passing at roundabouts, that is, drivers at a roundabout gave way to approaching cars, unless otherwise indicated by road signs.

This certain ambiguity has led to many risky situations. Currently, the same rule applies for passing through the roundabout as in the Czech Republic, i.e. those who are already at the roundabout have the right of way. Since this rule has not yet been implemented in Russia, caution is advised when driving at roundabouts, as well as when driving in Russia in general.

Fines for certain offenses in Russia

Traffic police fines are never paid in cash, but are transferred to an account at the nearest bank branch.
