Driving fines in Luxembourg

Luxembourg has a points system for both local and foreign drivers.

Tires

The use of winter tires has been mandatory in Luxembourg since 2012 when the road is covered with snow or ice.

There is no time limit for using winter tires. However, the Motor Club Luxembourg recommends using them when temperatures drop below 7°C.

All-season tires are also allowed, but drivers should be aware that they are not as efficient in winter.

Winter tires must be marked with the letters MS, M+S or M&S (mud and snow) and the snowflake mountain symbol.

The minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm, but the police recommend changing tires if the tread depth is less than 4 mm.

In case of snow or ice, snow chains can be used.

Studded tires are allowed from December 1 to March 31 for vehicles with or without a trailer, the total permissible weight of which does not exceed 3.5 tons, buses and special vehicles. They can be used in other months and in places where there is a risk of frost and snow on the road. Studded tires must be used on all 4 wheels (for a four-wheeled vehicle), in the case of dual wheels (for trucks), it is sufficient to use them on one pair of wheels. Vehicles equipped with studded tires are subject to speed limits of a maximum of 90 km/h on motorways and a maximum of 70 km/h on other roads.

Seat belts

The use of seat belts is mandatory for the driver and all other passengers of the vehicle.

Children in the car

Children under 3 must be seated in an approved child seat (except for children traveling by bus).

A rear-facing child car seat can only be placed in the front seat if the vehicle’s front airbag can be deactivated.

Children from 3 to 17 years old up to a height of 1.50 m must be placed in an appropriate child car seat. Children weighing more than 36 kg can be fastened with a seat belt or three-point seat belt, but only in the back seat of the car.

Alcohol

The maximum allowable blood alcohol level is 0.5 ppm.
