Vignette security features in Austria
The following features allow you to distinguish a real paid sticker from a fake one:
- All paid stickers are produced by a specialized company. Like banknotes, they feature a security hologram , which serves as the primary defense against counterfeiting: when you tilt the toll sticker, the federal eagle and the highway symbol flicker.
- Also part of the hologram: the year “for example, 22” refers to the period of validity of the paid sticker from December 1, 2021 to January 31, 2023.
- In addition, a real payment sticker does not let light through, even if you hold it against strong light. The same applies to the carrier foil: the inscription on one side should not show through to the other side.
- The surface of the payment sticker is made of a special reflective material. Using a flashlight, this effect can be easily observed when the payment sticker is attached to the vehicle.
- The blank field on the carrier foil, to which the payment sticker was attached before removal, must not have any adhesive residue .
In addition, you can also authenticate the paid sticker online. By entering the payment sticker number, including the check digit, the system determines if the payment sticker is printed correctly. The payment sticker number can be found under the printed barcode.

As with a traditional paid sticker, ASFINAG only performs random checks on the digital vignette.
