The fee in Poland depends on the category of the vehicle and the distance travelled.
Categories of vehicles in Poland
- Category 1: Motorcycles, 2-axle vehicles
- Category 2: Two-axle vehicles with a trailer, two-axle vehicles if one of them has double tires
- Category 3: 3-axle vehicles, 2-axle vehicles if one of them has dual tires with a trailer
- Category 4: Vehicles with 3 axles and a trailer, vehicles with more than 3 axles
- Category 5: Vehicles exceeding the permitted speed and dimensions

A4 motorway fare
Toll rates for the A4 motorway are effective from 1 October 2021. The toll is collected at each Toll Plaza, i.e. Myslowice and Balik, and is half the toll for the entire A4 Katowice-Krakow section.

Tolls in Poland
In Poland, you will receive a ticket when you enter a toll section of the motorway, you will pay the toll when you exit the motorway.
Since December 2021, electronic tolls, the so-called e-TOLL, have recently been introduced on the sections of the A2 motorways Konin – Strikow and A4 Wrocław – Sosnica. The so-called system of free flow without passage works here. You will pay through a mobile application or an e-ticket purchased from distributors. For more information visit Etoll.gov.pl . You can buy an e-ticket for these sections. You can also pay through the e-TOLL PL mobile app .
Payment by cash or card
The fare can be paid in zlotys, euros or dollars. If you pay in a different currency than Polish, then it will be returned in PLN. Internationally valid payment cards such as Diners, Master Card, Maestro and Visa are accepted. You can also pay with selected DKV, Routex or E100 fuel cards.
Prepaid A4 card
KartA4 prepaid cards can be used to pay tolls on the A4 motorway in the Katowice-Krakow section. The map is recommended for drivers who drive more often on the A4 highway. The prepaid card is available for category 1, 2, 3 and 4 vehicles. The card can be purchased online or at points of sale.
Electronic fare collection system e-TOLL
The former electronic system for vehicles over 3.5 tons (viaTOLL) is now being replaced by e-TOLL based on user positioning technology via satellite positioning via virtual gateways. E-TOLL is mandatory for all vehicles and combinations of vehicles with a maximum permissible weight over 3.5 tons, as well as for buses, regardless of their maximum permissible weight. In the e-TOLL system, toll collection is carried out in several ways:
- Via onboard OBU
- Using an external ZSL localization system – for factory locators
- Through the mobile application e-TOLL PL – free of charge in GooglePlay and AppStore

Speed limit in Poland
- City: 50 km/h (20 km/h in sleeping area)
- Outside the city: 90 km / h
- On the road for motor vehicles with 1 lane in each direction: 100 km/h
- On a vehicular road with 2 lanes in each direction: 120 km/h
- On the highway: 140 km / h
Fines for unpaid travel
If you lose your local ticket, you will pay the maximum amount possible for a vehicle of that category.
If you do not pay e-TOLL, you will pay a fine of PLN 500. If the fine is paid within 7 days from the date of delivery of the warning about the payment of the fee, it is reduced by PLN 100 from the amount indicated in the warning.

Fines for speeding in Poland
In Poland, in addition to fines, we are faced with a system of penalty points. Penalty points are awarded for misdemeanors on the roads, like ours. The maximum number of points is 24, and for novice drivers with a license up to 1 year – only 20. Since the beginning of 2022, fines and penalty points for all traffic violations, including speeding, have increased.
Unlike many other countries, there is no difference between speeding in and out of a village, so a single table is applied. In the event of a repeat offence, these amounts are doubled.
Table of fines in Poland
- up to 10 km / h: 50 PLN
- 11-20 km / h: from 100 PLN to 200 PLN and 3 points
- 21-30 km/h: from 300 PLN to 400 PLN and 6 points
- 31-50 km/h: from PLN 800 to 1000 from 10 to 13 points
- 51-70 km/h: from PLN 1500 to PLN 2000 and 15 points
- over 70 km/h: from PLN 2,500 and 15 points, in some cases loss of a driver’s license for three months
Also pay attention to the terrain of the speed change, the maximum speed of 60 km / h in municipalities at night is no longer valid. Pedestrians now have priority at crosswalks.

Mandatory car equipment in Poland

A first aid kit is only recommended, but should be equipped with commercial vehicles (eg taxis and buses).
For passengers of motorcycles, scooters and mopeds, a protective helmet is mandatory.
Tires
Winter tires are only recommended in Poland. The tire specimen must have a minimum depth of 1.6 mm. Studded tires must not be used. Snow chains can be used on snowy roads.
Seat belts
The use of seat belts is mandatory for all seats equipped with them.
Children in the car
Children under 150 cm tall and under 12 years of age must be transported in an appropriate and approved child restraint system, i.e. in the car seat or on the seat cushion.
Alcohol while driving in Poland
In Poland, the blood alcohol limit is 0.2 ppm.
- Fine for driving while intoxicated from 0.2 to 0.5 ppm – up to PLN 5000, 10 points and deprivation of a driver’s license for 6 months to 3 years.
- Fine for driving while intoxicated over 0.5 ppm – PLN 5,000, 10 points and deprivation of a driver’s license for 6 months to 3 years
